Topic: Healing of the Nation article
Details: Ladies, throw your hair up in a colorful bandu and gentleman, reach out to your bredren and take them on a journey with you as you explore new ways to maximize your health and the health of our planet through culture, food, music, and awareness. Your journey commences on September 11th as Long Beach plays host to the 1st Annual “Healing of The Nation Reggae Festival.” In an effort to draw awareness on the various ways people can lead a naturally healthy lifestyle, this all-day event hosted at Alfredo's Beach Club will feature live performances from a variety of international and local reggae bands, organic gardening education, fire dancing, a creative outlet ADVERTISEMENTyard for the youth, and yoga classes as presented by LB Yogalution and Trilogy Yoga. The event is complimentary and open to all ages. “What better place to hold a peaceful, educational event than on the beautiful coast of Southern California?” Says Dave Monaco of a Better Chemistry, one of the local bands that will be featured. Headlining the festival will be Half Pint and Papa “Baddingo” Michigan from Jamaica with support from Better Chemistry, Jah! Fellowship, Long Beach Liberators, Sandollar, and The Divine Crime. The festival is designed to assist Sol Adventures Foundation, a nonprofit organization that aims to educate children about organic gardening and music, and a portion of all proceeds will be donated back to their cause. Working with youth in Los Angeles and Jamaica, their mission, says Monaco, is “to assist disenfranchised individuals, especially youth, to discover their gifts and talents and share them with the world and gain strength through reconnecting with the community.” It was those two aspects –gardening and music –that personally inspired Monaco to contribute to Healing of The Nation along with his band Better Chemistry (their saxophonist, Brian Beekin, is one of the 3 founders). “I started a garden this year in my backyard and discovered how beneficial it is,” he says. “Growing my own vegetables and herbs is not only cost effective, but cooking with homegrown ingredients makes all the difference in taste. Since gardening and music are two of my biggest passions, I figured this would be something good be a part of.” And if a green thumb just wasn't included in your DNA makeup? Or if you know you should be eating healthier but are unsure where to begin? Attend one of the many speaker series that will be offered, ranging from “Raw Food Wellness” to “Organic Gardening and Permaculture” to “Yoga Philosophy.” Once the mind is opened, stretch the body with a variety of yoga courses being offered all day alongside a DJ and full raw cacao bar (chocolate is a direct descendent of cacao . . .ladies) As our nation continues to mend it's wounds on this 10th anniversary of 9/11, Monaco says “many people out there are in need of a helping hand and we feel this event is a platform to make people aware of the many ways they can be of service.” “In this day and age of negativity, war, prejudice and recession, an event like this encourages peace, positivity, and giving back,” he says. “Better Chemistry looks forward to being a part of that mission.”

Details: http://www.deseretnews.com/article/700053943/Better-Chemistry-shakes-things-up.html?pg=1 Desert News, Salt Lake City, UT. = Aug. 11th, 2010 By Scott Iwasaki While Better Chemistry's songs are as diverse as the band members themselves, they all sound like a Better Chemistry tune. "We have a certain identity," he said. "When you put in a Bob Marley album, you know it's Bob Marley, or if you put in some Dave Matthews Band, you know it's Dave Matthews. And I think if you put in a Better Chemistry CD, you know it's Better Chemistry. "Whatever we write, whether aggressive or mellow, or about sitting on the beach or having problems with a woman, we always want to be positive and help get through the day," he said.

RECENT RELEASE: 6 Foot Shorty (Chackhouse Records, 2007) KINDRED SPIRITS: The Clash, Ben Harper, Tippa Irie, Skatalites, Bob Marley and the Wailers, The Specials, The Grateful Dead, Sublime, Spearhead WEBSITE: www.betterchemistry.net It’s been said that people are the product of the company they keep. In Better Chemistry’s case, much of that company could be considered living legends. Crack open the reggae/rock hybrid’s latest release, 6 Foot Shorty, and you’ll see that this terrific troupe’s employed the skills of folks like Jurassic 5’s Chali 2na, plus reggae revolutionaries Tippa Irie and Pato Banton. Not an easy feat, to say the least. “We've been lucky,” says BC’s Eric “Dr. Wood” Woodruff, about wrangling some of these aforementioned names for such guest appearances. “I think that our show has turned some heads that have helped us out along the road.” And it’s a show that’s been brewing since Better Chemistry first launched in December 2001, playing their inaugural gig at the Black Watch Pub in Upland. Since then, the band’s opened for a host of reggae and rock greats, gained commercial airplay and placement on television programs, and of course, earned the respect of countless fans, both locally and outside the region. So, how did they get there? “I think that most of us have gone and seen other acts that floored us and gave us a lot of insight,” says Woodruff, on developing that BC sound. “We really want to make people feel good and leave all of their worries and troubles at the door. Just being able to give that back is a blessing to us . . . Better Chemistry is kind of our answer to the boring programmed mainstream radio stations that force feed the kids music that just really isn't all that exciting.” Better Chemistry is currently in the middle of recording a fourth album of original material and a cover songs album, both of which should be out early next year. And with a successful seven-year run under their belts, these Chemists promise to keep at it “until the wheels fall off,” Woodruff says. After all, he notes, “we've all been at it for too long to turn back now.” http://www.ieweekly.com/cms/story/detail/better_chemistry/1610/ –Waleed Rashidi

Topic: CD Review in Skinnie Magazine - HIS Opinion
Details: Review By Mikey Atilano: I was having a pretty shitty day until I heard Better Chemistry. This band is aptly named, as they do have better chemistry. Their chemistry includes blues, jungle, reggae, rock, hip-hop, ska, metal, disco, soul, funk, pop, punk, surf, gospel, and a few other influences that I'm sure I'm forgetting to include. They do an excellent job arranging these influences and their ideas to fit their music together nicely. Undiscovered Elements, the full-length release from Better Chemistry, demonstrates their musicality as a band. I predict that the party vibe they have will soon spread because this a band with the ability to easily produce multiople CDs of classic tunes.

Details: Review By Antoinette Bernal: The obvious cultural unity is brought to you from this six-piece band with their undeniable style and talent to showcase their plentiful and vast influences. An immediate good vibe places itself over you. When the music is playing, there is no way for the crowd to resist swaying its hips and minglingtheir bodies. On this twelve-track album, you can find lyrics dealing with deep thoughts on life, love, and friendship. All of which is flavored creatively on a non-stop and easy flow. On "Corre, Corre," you'll find the union of English and Spanish lyrics put tot he sultry beats of reggae, latin and rock complete with the finesse of a keyboard.
